How to make Indonesian masks (topeng)

 

First of all, students were watching a documentary about the history of Tari Topeng (masked-dance performance) and how a local Indonesian made a traditional mask. Traditionally, masks made by people who live on the islands Java, Bali and Sumatra were carved from wood.

But you can use inexpensive materials or objects you would otherwise throw away to recreate or mimic the look of these masks.

There are many different types of Indonesian masks, so kids had the chance to choose an image they like to guide them while making their mask.
